What happened to Omegle

Omegle ran for fourteen years and then stopped, almost overnight, on 8 November 2023. The short version is a lawsuit. The longer version explains why every Omegle alternative built since works slightly differently from the original.

When did Omegle shut down?

Omegle closed on 8 November 2023. Its founder, Leif K-Brooks, replaced the homepage with a long farewell letter and the service stopped working the same day. He had built it in March 2009, at eighteen years old, and it had been running ever since (Wikipedia).

The immediate cause was A.M. v. Omegle, a lawsuit brought on behalf of a girl who was randomly paired on the site with a much older man when she was eleven. The BBC interviewed her after the shutdown; she had spent years pursuing the case, and her abuser was sentenced to eight years in prison in Canada (BBC News, November 2023).

Why did Omegle shut down? The Section 230 ruling

Websites in the United States normally rely on Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, which says a platform is not the publisher of what its users post. Omegle raised that defence and the court in the District of Oregon did not accept it.

The reason is the part worth understanding. The claim was never about something a user had posted — it was about Omegle's own design decision to pair two strangers at random with no check on who they were. That is a product, not a piece of content, and Section 230 does not cover product design.

This single finding is why almost every serious Omegle alternative now has some form of age check. It is not caution for its own sake; it is the specific thing that ended the original.

It was already under pressure before the lawsuit

In February 2021 a BBC investigation titled "Omegle: Children expose themselves on video chat site" monitored the platform and was repeatedly paired with children, some apparently as young as seven or eight. K-Brooks told the BBC at the time that moderation had been increased.

Canadian police and child-protection groups reported the same pattern independently: predators using the site to collect self-generated material from children (CBC News).

Omegle also ran an openly unmoderated section for years, which made it almost impossible to advertise on and easy for schools and police forces to warn against. The lawsuit was the end of a long decline rather than a bolt from nowhere.

Is Omegle coming back in 2026?

The domain and the trademark changed hands in 2026. omegle.com now loads a holding page rather than an error, which means somebody is paying for it and intends to do something with it.

Whether a real relaunch follows, nobody outside that company knows. Any site telling you confidently that Omegle is or is not coming back is guessing. What is certain is that the name is owned again and no longer abandoned.

What to use instead of Omegle

The audience scattered quickly. OmeTV and Chatroulette had the largest existing crowds; Emerald Chat, Monkey and a long list of newer sites took the rest. They differ mainly in how seriously they treat the problem that closed Omegle — there is a full comparison here.

Kismaro is one of them. It does what Omegle did — press a button, meet a stranger, by text, voice or video — with the two things Omegle never had: a date of birth confirmed once and never editable, and a check that your camera is actually showing your face. Both exist because of everything above.

If you mainly want the conversation rather than the camera, there is a guide to talking with strangers that covers how to open one without it dying in ten seconds.

Frequently asked questions

When did Omegle shut down?

On 8 November 2023, after fourteen years. Founder Leif K-Brooks posted a farewell letter on the homepage and the service stopped the same day.

Why did Omegle shut down?

Because of A.M. v. Omegle, a lawsuit brought on behalf of a girl randomly paired with an adult predator as a child. The court found Section 230 did not protect Omegle, because the claim concerned how the product paired people rather than anything a user had posted.

Is Omegle gone for good?

The original service is gone. The domain and trademark changed hands in 2026 and omegle.com now shows a holding page, but no relaunch has happened.

What is the best Omegle alternative now?

OmeTV and Chatroulette have the most people online. Kismaro is closest in spirit — random text, voice and video with no profile to build — and adds a real age check and a face requirement on video.

Was Omegle safe for children?

No, and that is the finding that closed it. A 2021 BBC investigation was repeatedly paired with children on the site, and Omegle had no meaningful age verification.
