What makes an Omegle alternative actually safe

Every random chat site says it is safe and moderated. Omegle said so too, right up to the day a court declined to protect it. The difference between a claim and a safeguard is checkable in about two minutes, and this page is how.

The thing that closed Omegle is the thing to look for

The lawsuit that ended Omegle was not about something a user posted. It was about the site's own decision to pair two strangers at random with no check on who either of them was. A court in Oregon held that Section 230 does not cover that, because it is a product design decision rather than a piece of content (the full story).

That is why "safe" in this category has a specific meaning. Not friendly rules, not a report button — does the site know anything about who it is pairing, and does it check that the camera is showing a person? Almost none of them do either.

The two-minute test for any random chat site

One: find the age gate. If it is a button saying "I am 18", there is no age gate. A real one asks for a date of birth on its own screen and does not let you change it afterwards.

Two: cover your camera and see what happens. On a site with a face check, the conversation ends within about twenty seconds. On every other site, nothing happens at all — which is also what happens when the person on the other side is showing a recording.

Three: press report on something. Then see whether you are told what happened. A report that vanishes into nothing is a button, not a moderation system.

Four: read what is recorded. "We may retain video for safety purposes" means there is an archive of your conversations somewhere, and archives leak.

How Kismaro answers those four

Age is confirmed once, on its own screen, and never editable. Not a checkbox. This is also the reason you cannot start without signing in, which costs us visitors — you cannot enforce a date of birth you never collected.

Your camera has to show you. A face check runs in your browser every few seconds; the result, not the video, is what reaches us. No face for about twenty seconds and the conversation ends. A second check scores the frame for nudity in your browser, and the server audits a real frame against what your browser claimed — which is the only part that catches a modified client.

Reports are read. There is a moderation queue behind the button, with bans and strikes attached to accounts and devices. The community rules set out what gets you removed.

Nothing is recorded. No video, no audio, no message text. There is no archive to leak. What we do keep.

What no site can protect you from

Everything above is about who you are paired with. None of it stops you from telling a stranger where you live, and that is the part that actually goes wrong for most people.

Do not give out your full name, your school or workplace, your town, your phone number or your social accounts. Assume anything on your camera is being recorded at the other end whatever the site's policy says, because their policy does not govern their screen recorder. Our safety page is the longer version, and anonymous video chat covers what anonymity does and does not mean here.

Safe does not mean unmoderated but friendly

A site with no rules is not neutral, it is a site whose rules are set by whoever behaves worst on it. The unmoderated section Omegle ran for years is the clearest example: it made the whole site impossible to advertise on and easy for schools and police forces to warn against.

Kismaro is 18+ and moderated, and both of those things narrow who uses it. That is the intent. If you want the full comparison of who does what, it is on the ranked list.

Frequently asked questions

What is the safest Omegle alternative?

The one that checks who it is pairing. Kismaro confirms a date of birth on its own screen, never editable afterwards, and requires your camera to show a face in video mode. Every other major site in this category treats age as a checkbox.

How can I tell if a random chat site is safe?

Four checks. Find the age gate and see whether it is more than a button. Cover your camera and see whether anything happens. Press report and see whether you are told the outcome. Read what the site says it records.

Why did Omegle get shut down over safety?

A United States court found that Section 230 did not protect Omegle, because the claim was about its own design decision to pair strangers at random with no check on who they were, rather than about anything a user had posted.

Does Kismaro record video calls?

No. No video, no audio and no message text is recorded. There is no archive of conversations, so there is nothing to leak.

Is random video chat safe for under-18s?

No, and Kismaro is 18+ only. This is the specific issue that ended Omegle, and no site in this category is appropriate for children.
