This explains what Kismaro ("we") collects, why, and what you can do about it. It is written to be read, not to be impressive.
Who is responsible
Tech Interval LLC operates Kismaro and is the data controller for the data described here. It can be reached in writing at 1209 Mountain Road Pl NE Ste R, Albuquerque, NM 87110, United States, or at [email protected].
The short version
- We do not record your conversations. Video, voice and text are not stored.
- We keep the minimum needed to run the service and to enforce our rules.
- We do not sell your data and we do not use advertising trackers.
What we collect
If you create an account
- A user identifier from Google Firebase Authentication
- Your email address, if you sign in with Google or an email link
- The nickname, date of birth and gender you declare
- The date, time and IP address at which you confirmed those details
The date of birth is kept because we must be able to show that we operate an age gate.
Automatically
- Your IP address, and the country our network provider derives from it
- A device identifier stored in your browser
- Basic connection information needed to set up a call
When you have a conversation
- That it happened: the time, how long it lasted, which mode, which country, and the IP address and device involved
- How long you waited before being matched
We keep this to run the service and to see where it is failing people — for example, how long people wait before giving up. What was said or shown is not part of it.
If you are reported
- The reason given, the time, and the identifiers of both people involved
Your camera and microphone
This matters, so it is separate.
- Conversations are not recorded. Audio and video travel directly between you and the other person wherever possible.
- When a direct connection is impossible, media passes through a relay server we operate. It is forwarded, not stored.
- In video mode your browser samples your own camera every few seconds to check a face is visible. That check runs on your device and the images are not uploaded.
- If your browser cannot perform that check, or a report requires review, a single still image may be sent to our server to be assessed and then discarded.
Where your data is held
Our servers are in France. We also use Google Analytics for page statistics and Google Firebase for sign-in and Cloudflare to serve and protect the site; both may process data outside your country.
How long we keep it
- Conversations — not kept at all
- Records that a conversation happened — 7 days. These contain an IP address, so they are deleted quickly.
- Usage statistics — 90 days. Counts and averages by hour; these identify nobody.
- Reports — 12 months
- Bans — until they expire, then 12 months
- Account details — until you delete your account
These are enforced by a job that runs automatically, not by hand.
Your rights
If you are in the UK, the EU or another place with similar law, you may ask for a copy of your data, ask us to correct or delete it, or object to how we use it. Write to [email protected] and we will respond within one month.
One exception: we may keep a record of a ban even after an account is deleted, because otherwise a ban could be erased simply by deleting the account.
Cookies and tracking
We use Google Analytics to understand which pages people arrive on and which ones they leave from. It sets cookies in your browser and tells Google which pages of this site you viewed, roughly where in the world you are, and what browser you used. It does not receive your name, your email address, or anything at all about a conversation — analytics runs on the pages, not inside a chat.
In the UK, the EEA and Switzerland we ask first. Nothing is sent to Google until you press Accept, and declining is one press of a button the same size. Elsewhere analytics loads by default and you can turn it off at any time, here:
We do not use advertising cookies, we do not run ads, and we do not sell or share your data with advertisers. You can also block analytics with any content blocker, or with Google's own opt-out add-on, and the site works exactly the same.
Analytics is never loaded on the moderation dashboard. The usage counts described above are separate: they are produced by our own server from your activity on this site alone, and are not shared with Google.
We store your preferences — theme, chosen mode, volume, camera choice — in your browser. Clearing your browser data removes them.
Children
Kismaro is for adults. We do not knowingly collect data from anyone under 18. If you believe a child is using the service, write to [email protected] and we will act.
Changes
If we change this policy we will update the date at the top. Material changes will be announced on the site.
